Coach Mack Capelle said, “The coaches for the others lifters were waiting to see if we would decrease Mattie’s first lift, and we were waiting to see if they would increase their lifters’ weights. When they didn’t increase the first attempts for their lifters, we felt confident that Mattie had a great chance of winning the championship.

Marshall Islands weightlifter Mathlynn “Mattie” Sasser made history for the RMI at the American Open earlier this month, beating 64 of the best women weightlifters in the US to win a silver medal, while breaking an Oceania Junior record that has stood for 14 years.

Dec. 11, 2013 - Marshall Islands Table Tennis Federation (MITTF) has had the opportunity to add a total of 8 coaches who have or will complete the 50 hours of coaching required for becoming internationally recognised Level 1 Coaches certified by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

RMI's Mattie Sasser Excels at Mini Games

This marks RMI’s first weightlifting medals at a Pacific Games and the most medals won by a Marshallese athlete at a Pacific Games. Mattie came in second only to Jenlyn Tegu Wini, a 30-year old veteran lifter from Solomon Islands, who competed last summer at the London Olympic Games.

Pacific Mini Games - Jason Sam Brings Home Gold

In the months leading up to his Pacific Mini Games gold medal, Jason Sam benefitted from world-class taekwondo training at the National Taiwan Sport University (NTSU). His schedule included two-a-day training sessions that were two and a half hours each, Monday through Friday, daily match fights with other NTSU students, and regular tournaments with other schools.

This year, day one and the morning of day two of the championship found Marshall Islands dominating the podium, and many competitors, coaches and officials commented that RMI is now a force to be reckoned with in Oceania.

2016 Rio Olympics are in sight for a 16 year old Marshall Islands teenager Mathlynn "Mattie" Sasser.
The female weightlifter is now number one in her weight class in the 20-and-under junior division of Oceania after winning gold at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
She beat lifters from Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Fiji to win the gold in a combined class of 58kg and 63kgs

Level 2 Basketball Coaching Clinic

Just completed this week was the Basketball Coaching Level 2 Clinic. This is the first Level 2 clinic in Majuro, and the only one ever offered in the region. The clinic was taught by former NBA Coach and hall of famer, Coach Tom Newell.

Coaching Clinic Held in Majuro

Australian Basketball Coach Paul Goriss arrived in Majuro Thursday (November 15) morning to lead a clinic session with local coaches, most of whom coach elementary, middle and high school teams in Majuro. Goriss, from the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, is running a series of coaching clinics for men and women coaches for a week.

An Olympic debut is often the highlight of young athletes’ careers, and for Timi Garstang of the Marshall Islands, it was no exception. Timi competed in the men’s 100 metre preliminary rounds, in the second heat , lane three.
“My coach told me to go out, do my best and to keep running to the finish line.” Timi unfortunately finished last in his heat with a time of 12.81 seconds, over 2 seconds slower than the fastest qualifier, for Timi that wasn’t good enough.

The eyes of the Pacific Islands were drawn to the Olympic Stadium as 9 Oceania athletes took to the track for the men’s 100m preliminary rounds. Athletes from Tonga, Palau, Tuvalu, The Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, American Samoa, The Solomon Islands, Kiribati and The Cook Islands all took part in the 4 heats.

“I’m glad I got a personal best, the fastest I’ve ever gone, and I’m glad I did it at the London 2012 Olympics and I did it with my country’s flag on my back.” These were the words of Giordan Harris, a 50m freestyle swimmer from the Marshall Islands, just minutes after his Olympic debut here in London.

MINOC, CMI Host STOP HIV Training in the Marshall Islands

Team Marshall Islands athletes reached new levels in their performances at the New Caledonia 2011 Pacific Games. Our team consisted of three swimmers and one runner. Personal bests were achieved by nearly all of the athletes that were sent to compete.
MISEP at First RMI Youth Festival

The first RMI Youth Festival was held in the first week of August, with Marshall Islands Sport Education Program (MISEP) coordinating the sports tournaments. During the week, Youth Festival participants gathered at the International Convention Center for conferences that outlined today's social and environmental issues, ranging from climate change to HIV/AIDS. The Youth Festival Organizing Committee agreed to have MISEP run the tournaments, which were held in the evenings shortly after their conferences at Delap Elementary School and the old Weather Station.

OSEP Director Sainimili (“Millie”) Lavenia Talatoka visited Majuro on May 18-28 for the roll out of MINOC’s Marshall Islands Sport Education Program (MISEP) Program. Talatoka conducted a number of Training Programs, which have been specifically designed to provide a community-based approach to sport education by developing flexible, relevant and modern curricula and training support resources in the areas of coaching, officiating and administration training.
Sports Medicine Course

A Basic Sport Medicine Course took place in Majuro November 25, 26, 27 and 29 run by Dr. Caleb Otto of Palau and Dr. Catherine Wong of Fiji. This capacity-building training opportunity was conducted under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission and funded by the Olympic Solidarity and is intended to educate doctors, physiotherapists, trainers and coaches with practical and clinical scientific training in sport medicine.
